PURPLE – Peri-Urban Regions Platform EuropePURPLE – Peri-Urban Regions Platform Europe

Peri-urban regions in Europe face great pressures on their rural areas. Yet agriculture is still a significant economic sector and provides an important landscape setting. Many areas have areas of protection such as green belt and national parks, yet face significant pressures for urban expansions. Rural communities still need to provide adequate services to maintain a living countryside.

The South East is one of 12 regions that have joined together to form a network that will promote the needs of such areas and gain recognition for a specific peri-urban agenda and exchange best practice.

The network includes: Region Randstad [ Netherlands]; MHAL [ Province of Limburg, Belgium]; Flanders [ Belgium]; Ile de France [ France]: Rhones-Alpes [ France]: Nord/Pas de Calais [France]; Catalunya [ Spain]; Mazovia [ Poland]; Stockholm [ Sweden]; Frankfurt [ Germany] and West Midlands [also in the UK].
