
Working together for a zero waste South East
The Pathway To Zero Waste (PTZW) founding partners are the South East of England Development Agency (SEEDA), the Environment Agency (EA) and WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme). Other partners are the Department for Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), Improvement and Efficiency South East (IESE), the Government Office for the South East (GOSE), the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP), the South East Centre for the Built Environment (SECBE), and EnviroBusiness. To change cultures towards material efficiency in the South East, PTZW will harness the collective strength of the partners.

SEEDA (South East England Development Agency) will provide regional leadership and limited pump prime funding for appropriate infrastructure development. It will also seek to influence Government policy to enable effective implementation of waste directives and regulations.

The Environment Agency will assist with policy/legislative guidance and influencing national Government on legislative change, removing regulatory barriers to the recovery and re-use of waste materials. The Environment Agency will help to improve data & statistics management and target waste crime prevention and enforcement action against illegal tipping.

Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) will use national expertise to reduce waste and recycle more, making better use of resources. They will assist with Waste Protocols (jointly with The Environment Agency), the provision of tools for waste resource management, materials efficiency guidance, good practice procurement templates and sector market development.

Department for Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) provide national leadership and Government influence and will assist with the development of Commodity Markets in recovered materials.

Improvement and Efficiency South East (IESE) will contribute by representing the public sector agenda, engaging with large construction companies and using the construction network as an access point for PTZW, whilst advancing support through sharing intelligence.

National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) will promote the PTZW project with its network of members in the region. It will identify and facilitate the exchange of surplus or under-utilised resources between regional businesses to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. It will engage with businesses to promote recycling, resource efficiency, and best practice.

South East Centre for the Built Environment (SECBE) improves business performance of the built environment sector in the South East, and for PTZW will provide strategic guidance and innovative thinking to help with a paradigm shift in awareness, attitude and behaviour. Using specialist understanding of market issues SECBE is able to bring together organisations towards common objectives.

EnviroBusiness will actively engage with relevant stakeholders and will facilitate project development using their knowledge of the environmental sector to build confidence in the use of material and resource streams and to highlight best practice.
