PANCAKES BRING SCIENCE
TO LIFE
Pancakes brought science and technology to life for local school
students in Newbury when New Greenham Park launched its Expotech
2000 Week to promote technological skills to Berkshire's young
people.
Precision
Pancakes, an event sponsored by the South East England Development
Agency (SEEDA) and hosted by TV science guru, Professor Heinz
Woolf, bought together teams from local schools and businesses
to design and build pancake making machines.
Each of the
ten teams was set the task of creating a machine from limited
materials, which would cook and toss a pancake. Heinz Woolf judged
the results based upon functional operation, elegance of design
and gastronomic quality. A team from Newbury Volunteer Bureau
took the first prize closely followed by a team from Xtrac Ltd.
Amongst all the fun a serious side to the event was explained
by SEEDA's Senior Learning and Skills Manager, Gilly Bartrip:
"Our aim is to break down some of the negative perceptions about
science and technology and to inspire young people to consider
careers in these areas. High-tech companies are a major growth
sector in the South East region and it is critical that we provide
our young people with the right skills and training to take advantage
of the excellent career opportunities in these industries."
Expotech will tour schools and venues in West Berkshire until
October 5 challenging the traditional views of science. Greenham
Trust's Science & Technology Manager, Katie Wilson, said: "We
hope to make Expotech an annual event to promote science and technology
to young people and to help create links between schools and businesses
in the area."
