Summary of Meeting

[Note - The Board held an awayday to consider the review of the Regional Economic Strategy. The board meeting was confined to conducting necessary business].

  • The Board approved the minutes of the previous meeting.
  • The Board noted the Finance Report and the Chief Executive's Report.

Tourism

1. The Chief Executive noted that Tessa Jowell had announced that the English Tourism Council was to be reorganised with emphasis on domestic marketing and greater industry involvement and that RDAs were to be given greater responsibility for tourism in the regions. SEEDA had welcomed this announcement. Tourism in the region is worth some £7 billion annually and provides employment directly and indirectly for over 250,000 people.

2. There will be a new body to market England strongly, and the Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) will in future play a stronger part in the strategic leadership of tourism, with the Regional Tourist Boards acting as the natural delivery partners within the region.

Date of Next Meeting

3. The next meeting of the SEEDA Board will be held on Thursday 25 July at SEEDA Headquarters, Guildford.
